The Do's

The following are some helpful hints for what you can do when you know someone is depressed.

Acknowledge that the person is ill and that treatment is a priority.

Recognise that the symptoms of depression can change a person's behaviour.

Be aware that people with depression have a negative outlook.

Recognise that family members are going through a stressful period as well.

Recognise that family members may have to adjust their responsibilities - whether housekeeping routines, having simpler meals, changing the 'chores' roster.

Try to make healthy lifestyle choices - avoid excessive alcohol, exercise regularly, have a healthy diet.

Encourage healthy sleeping habits - maintain regular bedtimes, reduce caffeine intake, sleep in a cool room, avoid strenuous activities before bedtime, and use the bed only for sleeping or sex.

Discuss the progress and effects of treatment openly with the doctor.
