How common is depression in young people?

About 1 in 20 children and teenagers suffer from depression. The condition becomes more common as a young person gets older and goes through puberty.

Is there any difference in the rates of depression in boys and girls?

In children , the rate of depression in boys and girls is about the same. After puberty, the rate of depression in girls increases and becomes higher than that observed in boys.

Are most cases of depression picked up by parents, teachers and healthprofessionals?

No. In fact many cases of depression are missed, as it is often less obvious than depression in adults.

Is there a test or questionnaire that you can do to see if you are depressed?

Yes, there is, but any young person who has been feeling sad or depressed for some weeks, or has had thoughts of self harm or suicide, should see their doctor or talk to someone they can trust to get help.
