Is ECT safe?

ECT is considered a safe treatment. All anaesthetics carry some risk, and patients need to be carefully screened for any current medical conditions such as heart or lung disease to minimise that risk. Because of the muscle-relaxing drug that is used, the convulsion does not involve the body and the patient does not need to be held down, as some people might imagine. ECT does not cause brain damage.
