All about Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) was first used more than 60 years ago and many people are surprised to learn that it is still one of the safest and most useful treatments for depression. It is mostly used for people who are seriously ill, such as those who are at high risk of suicide or have depression which prevents them from eating or drinking. In these situations it is often a life-saving treatment. However, ECT is not used only for desperate situations. It can also be very helpful for less severe types of depression when other treatments such as medication have failed.
