Psychological treatments for depression involve
a variety of techniques, including supportive counselling,
insight-oriented psychotherapy, cognitive therapy,
behavioural therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy,
marital counselling and family therapy.
The choice of treatment depends on the severity
of the depression. In mild depression, supportive
counselling may be all that is required. In moderate
depression, medication will probably be needed as
well as more intensive psychotherapy. In severe
cases, hospitalisation may be necessary to ensure
a person's safety and to provide intensive
treatment.
Every person is unique and needs an individual assessment
by a doctor or other appropriately trained health
professional. The descriptions of treatment options
below are a general guide only.
