Common misconceptions about 'natural' remedies

"If it is natural it cannot harm me."

Side-effects can occur with any tablets or medications, whether they are prescribed or over-the-counter. This also applies to 'herbal' medication. Just because a bottle contains a substance derived from nature, it does not guarantee there will be no unwanted effects.

"If it is natural I can take a higher dose."

All drugs, whether naturally occurring or made in laboratories, have the potential to interact with body systems, and there are maximum safe doses.

"Because it comes from a health shop, I can take it with other medicines."

Reactions can occur between herbal medications and prescribed medications. Always check with your doctor first.

"Because it is natural it will be more effective."

The most effective treatments for depression are the medications that have been rigorously tested and evaluated, and have standardised concentrations.

Keep in close contact with a trusted doctor, and discuss any changes in your medications.
