Who benefits from antidepressants?
There is now abundant evidence that antidepressants are effective for most people with depression. In general, antidepressants have the greatest benefit in people with:

moderate to severe depression
depression which is not responding to psychological treatment alone

Psychological techniques will often be used in combination with antidepressant medication. The medication provides relief from the disabling symptoms, while the psychotherapy helps people to understand the illness and learn more effective ways to cope with problems.
