Depression
Since the 1950s, the treatment of depression has
been with antidepressant medications. Their discovery
was one of the great breakthroughs in medical treatment
of the 20th century.
Antidepressants help people to live fulfilling lives
instead of losing jobs and relationships, possibly
committing suicide, or living a life of worthlessness
and hopelessness. Despite their benefits, antidepressants
are sometimes misunderstood, considered as an unnecessary
'crutch', or thought to be addictive.
The truth is that, used properly and with due regard
for their side-effects, antidepressants can have
profound benefits.
