Alcohol
and Depression
Depression can lead to an increased use of alcohol,
and heavy drinking may contribute to depression.
Between 30% and 70% of people with alcoholism suffer
depression, and between 20% and 70% of people with
major depression have a drinking problem.
Alcohol is relaxing and reduces inhibitions, at
least at first. It can provide a pleasant sense
of confidence and reduce feelings of tension and
anxiety. Alcohol is not the answer to feeling 'down'
because over-indulgence can trigger depression.
Treating any alcohol problems can make a huge improvement
to mood in people who are also depressed. If you
think you need help - or know someone else who does
- then contact your doctor or your local community
centre for information about drug and alcohol treatment
centres.
