How can you help yourself?
Remember that suicidal feelings are a symptom of depression and that treatment for depression is effective and readily available. When the depression is controlled, so are the hopelessness and thoughts of suicide.

Consider past solutions. You have coped with difficult episodes before, so you can get through this. How did you do it last time? Try applying the same strategies to the present situation.

Learn the art of positive thinking. Thoughts like "I'm hopeless" or "I'll never get a job" are damaging. Try to be more practical - for example: "Let's see if there is a way to improve my job prospects. How about retraining?"

Physical activity. Exercise and using up energy helps lift your mood and promotes positive thoughts. Encourage yourself to do some regular physical activity, like walking or swimming, preferably with someone else.

Remember that antidepressant medication can help. Don't see medication as a sign of weakness, or believe that you should be able to solve your problems entirely by yourself.

Never be afraid or ashamed to seek help. However alone you may feel right now, help is available. Let your family and friends know that there are times when you feel very despairing, and talk with them at those times. Make sure you let your doctor know how bad you feel. Treatment does work!
